Baked Mac and Cheese with a Crispy Golden-Brown Crust

A classic comfort food combining creamy cheese and al dente pasta, topped with a crunchy layer.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) Elbow Macaroni (Cooked al dente)
  • 1/2 cup (115g) Unsalted Butter
  • 1/2 cup (65g) All-Purpose Flour
  • 4 cups (950ml) Whole Milk (Room temperature)
  • 3 cups (340g) Sharp White Cheddar (Freshly shredded)
  • 2 cups (225g) Gruyère Cheese (Divided use)
  • 1/2 cup (50g) Grated Parmesan (For the crust)
  • 1 tsp (5g) Dijon Mustard
  • 1/4 tsp (1g) Nutmeg (Ground)
  • 2 tbsp (8g) Fresh Parsley (Finely chopped for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook the elbow macaroni according to package directions and drain.
  3. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat.
  4. Once the butter is melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes.
  5. Slowly pour in the whole milk while continuing to whisk until the mixture is smooth.
  6. Add the Dijon mustard and nutmeg, mixing well.
  7. Gradually stir in the sharp white cheddar and 1 cup of Gruyère cheese until fully melted and creamy.
  8. Mix the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until well combined.
  9. Pour the mac and cheese into a greased baking dish.
  10. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining Gruyère cheese and grated Parmesan. Sprinkle this mixture over the mac and cheese.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden-brown and crispy.
  12. Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For an extra crunchy topping, mix breadcrumbs with the cheese topping. You can also add cooked bacon or sautéed vegetables for added flavor.
