Ingredients
Scale
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder (sifted)
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs (at room temperature)
1 cup buttermilk (at room temperature)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup strong hot coffee
1 cup unsalted butter (softened to room temperature)
3 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
3/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder (sifted)
3–4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.
Stir in the hot coffee until the batter is well combined.
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing well.
Add the heavy cream (or milk), vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until smooth and fluffy.
Notes
For best results, use high-quality cocoa powder and ensure all ingredients are at room temperature.
